Twenty-One

Thad

“Sweetheart,” my mom said to me as we stood with my dad a few feet away from the Alpha’s table. “Not that you ever look like anything is thrilling you, but you seem especially down tonight. Are you okay?”

“I’m fine, Mom,” I replied, my eyes bouncing between the dance floor in the center of the room, where every Pack member between the ages of twelve and twenty-four was now beginning to congregate, and the bar on the far wall, where Ben and Mave were now lingering together, having bolted from our dinner table as soon as they possibly could. “I’m just… frustrated.”

She nodded, and she and my dad both gave me a sympathetic look. “That certainly was an… awkward dinner,” Dad said, casting a glance back toward where the Alpha was holding court with various Pack leaders. “This whole thing with the Fortunes and Knox’s fated mating is such a mess.”

It definitely had been awkward, with the Alpha basically announcing that Knox and Mave were going to be mated after graduation while both of them looked horrified by the statement. Jack Fortune had thrown around some serious angry Alpha energy, and things had been testy, to say the least.

Ben and I hadn’t been seated close enough at the table to speak to one another, but I’m sure my parents didn’t fail to notice how my eyes rarely left him, while he spent the entire dinner ignoring me and casting concerned glances toward his sister, who had been seated near the Alpha and Knox.

“You know,” Mom said as she nudged my shoulder. “That Ben Fortune is a very attractive young man.”

“Indeed he is,” my dad chimed in, because apparently we were now a trio of gossiping girlfriends. “I caught him glancing your way at dinner a few times when you weren’t looking, son.”

I sighed, my eyes finding Ben across the room again. “I’ve messed things up,” I admitted after a lengthy pause. “I liked him, but I didn’t want to like him. I thought he wasn’t the right kind of wolf.”

“But it turns out he’s perfect,” Mom said knowingly. “You couldn’t have known, sweetheart. That whole omega thing was… odd.”

“It’ll work out, Thad,” Dad said confidently. “You’re just as much of a catch for him as he is for you. If it’s meant to be, all of that will be water under the bridge.”

“Chris! There’s my favorite partner!”

Thomas Montgomery bustled over to us with Lena and Caroline in tow, his face flushed from too many glasses of scotch. Lena sidled up right next to me, curling her arm through mine. I tried to gently extract myself from her hold, but she held on tight, giving me a “don’t make a scene” glare before turning to give a tight smile to our parents.

“I am so sorry we weren’t seated with you all at dinner,” Caroline said to us. “I’m sure it must have been very grating to be forced to dine with those backwoods pack cast-offs.”

“It was perfectly fine,” my dad replied tonelessly.
